Many times, with youth groups, we seem to measure success in numbers. Usually when someone is asking me about the youth at Lakeview, they say something like this: "So, how many young people are in your youth group?" I will usually throw out a number, but I always try to follow up by mentioning one of our youth.
I'll say something along the lines of, "Let me tell you about _________ and how I think God is working in their life!"
How do I feel we should measure success?
Look, if we wanted a BIG youth group we could do it. I'm sure of it. Myself, Sarah, Eddie, Nikki, Keith, Kerri... (and the list goes on and on) could no doubt add different elements to the ministries we already have. Some churches bring in wild lights, crazy music and worldly measures to attract youth. Standards are lowered and the teaching of God's Word is set to the side - all for the sake of "getting just a few more" and "not being offensive".
I want the parents of our young people to know that we will always be teaching God's Word. That is what our young people need. Not another reference to the coolest MTV show or small group discussions on the latest fashion trends. My vision for our youth is to see them rooted and grounded in Jesus Christ.
I spoke to our young people about this very topic last night. We talked about Matthew 6:33, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness..." How does a teenager find happiness? By seeking Jesus. How does a young person find satisfaction in this life? By searching for Christ!
Could we have a "big" youth group. Yes, but I don't want a youth group that is 10 miles wide but only 2 inches deep. Jesus chose 12 men to follow Him - one left them - but the remaining 11 ended up turning the world upside down!
My vision for the youth at Lakeview is to continually teach the Word of God CORRECTLY and to see our kids become excited about Jesus Christ. Five teens who are on fire for and in love with God could do more to bring glory to His name than a large youth group ever could.
I am excited about the future for the youth at Lakeview. Please pray for God's grace on our youth!

I really appreciate that the youth at Lakeview always dress modestly. It's hard for young people, especially females, to find ANYTHING appropriate to wear to church!
