This past Saturday some of our AWESOME young people decided to give up a portion of their Saturday for some ladies in the church who had some yard work that demanded attention. With great fervor these young people DIVED into the work without hesitation! There was raking, mowing, weed-eating, stick-picking-up-ing, bush cutting, tree pruning... you name it, they did it!
I am so thankful to God for those young people and their heart of service. Galatians 5:13 says, "by love serve one another." Now in the text Paul is addressing some issues in the church there at Galatia, but those 5 words carry some heavy weight in addition to what he was talking about. In the next verse he quotes the Old Testament, advising the people to "love their neighbor as themselves!"
I want our young people to practice what James called "pure religion." I want our young people to desire service and sacrifice over self-pleasure and self-gain. If the church as a whole lived what Paul commanded, to "serve one another, by love" just imagine how high God would be lifted and how much more rich our worship and fellowship would be! Our youth group should have that mindset... so things are changing.
One of the young people came up to me on Saturday and said, "We should do stuff like this more often!" I thought the young folk would have a good time helping some of the widows but I would have never imagined they would ask to WORK instead of PLAY. That sentiment was echoed by the others as well... so things are changing.
There is this notion that youth groups are suppose to be about having fun, playing laser tag or just chilling and hanging out - what a sad frame of mind! We are the active body of Christ not a bean bag chair! Things are changing...
Our "outings" are going to change - that doesn't mean we are not going to have fun. It means that the emphasis for many of our future meetings will be about others and not ourselves. Things are changing...
Things are changing for the better - trust me!
May God get the glory! By love, serve one another!
